In perhaps a sign of the times, it was revealed over the weekend that Disney had submitted applications to purchase the trademark rights for “Seal Team 6″, the designation of the Navy special forces unit that killed Osama bin Laden during the raid of a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan where the terrorist had been hiding. The trademark applications were submitted on May 3, just two days after OBL’s death was announced. They appear to be all-inclusive, covering clothing, footwear, headwear, toys, games, gymnastics and sporting articles, and “entertainment and education services”, among other categories.
SEAL Team 6 has received an enormous amount of (apparently unwanted) publicity in the two weeks since the May 1 raid, and Disney is not the only company to recognize the profit potential here. MetroGames, a California-based social gaming company, submitted an application this week to trademark the name “Team 6.” Additionally, St. Martin’s Press, publisher of the book “SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper”, has pushed forward the book’s release date and quadrupled the number of printed copies in response to the spike in interest following the raid.
No word yet on whether Disney plans a “Seal Team 6″ action figure set, but they may be able to gauge sales potential from similar items already on the market.
